Walking with Rumi

Veel mensen die ik onderweg ontmoette waren nieuwsgierig waar ik, alleen en te voet, naar onderweg was en vooral waarom. Dat iemand van Istanbul naar Konya loopt riep veel verbazing en bewondering op. Als ik vertelde over mijn pelgrimage naar de tombe van Rumi en het gesprek zich ontwikkelde reikte ik hun een hand met kaartjes aan, met citaten van Rumi – in zowel Engels als Turks – en vroeg hun er een uit te kiezen. Het gekozen citaat mochten ze houden. Nadien maakte ik een portretfoto met hun kaartje. Bij deze foto beschreef ik het hoe en wat van onze ontmoeting. Dat publiceerde ik op Instagram. De geportretteerden konden zichzelf zo terug zien, maar ook elkaar.

Walking with Rumi is een portret van een pelgrimage. Dit verslag gaat over de ontmoeting, de interesse in elkaar en wat wij als mensen met elkaar kunnen delen, zelfs over culturele verschillen heen. In dit boek wordt de menselijke warmte gevangen in foto’s en teksten. De spreuken van Rumi geven een diepere laag aan de ontmoetingen. Het geheel toont het goede van de mens en het bevestigt dat het leven ook mooi kan zijn, als mensen uit hun hart spreken of handelen.

Many people I met were curious about where I was going, alone and on foot, and especially why. That someone would walk from Istanbul to Konya resulted in astonishment and admiration. When I spoke of my pilgrimage to Rumi’s tomb and the conversation developed, I offered them a handful of cards with Rumi citations – both in English and Turkish – and asked them to choose one. They were to keep the card they chose. Afterwards, I portrayed them with their card. Along with the photo, I described the details of our meeting. I published it on Instagram. This way, those portrayed were able to see themselves, as well as each other.

Walking with Rumi is a portrait of a pilgrimage. This publication is about the meeting, the interest in each other, and what we as humans can share with each other, even beyond the boundaries of cultural difference. In this book, human warmth is captured in photos and text. Rumi’s verses give deeper meaning to the encounters. The whole shows the good in humanity and confirms that life can be beautiful when people speak or act from the heart.
